Our Vets

Dr Terry Herder BVSc - Senior Veterinarian/Practice Owner

Since graduating  from Sydney University in 1986 , I've worked as a general practitioner in a variety of Veterinary hospitals across the Sydney region. In that time I have gained some 30 years of practical experience in small animal medicine and surgery.

I am particularly interested in the field of "preventative medicine" - exploring the range of options available in foods, dental care, parasite control and disease prevention - to keep pets healthy and safe so that they live long and enjoyable lives!

Together with my wife Jane(who I met at University), I have owned and managed St Marys Vet Hospital since 2001. We're committed to maintaining a reputation for high quality service and advice to our clients and their pets.

I hope that you'll visit us and we have the opportunity to look after you and  your pet.

Dr Jane Herder BVSc - Senior Veterinarian/Practice Owner

Hi!. I have enjoyed working as a Veterinarian for over 30 years. Although there are many aspects of my career that I find interesting, I get particular satisfaction from taking on the surgical challenges which we see.

At home we have a slowly-growing menagerie - 2 cats (Izzy and Eliza), 2 sheep (Ali Baa-Baa and Shawn), 1 Rabbit ( Crystal), 2 chickens & multiple goldfish. I,m also a mum/chauffer to our two teenage children, and I'm  actively involved in our church family.

Dr Shani Gomez BVSc - Associate Veterinarian

Shani graduated from the University of Sydney in 2014. Originally from Sri-Lanka, Shani wanted to move to Australia because of all the amazing animals that you can only find in this country.

Before working as a veterinarian at St Marys Veterinary Hospital, Shani worked a s veterinary nurse and she can't think of a better profession to be in.

Shani has a soft spot for cats and their mysterious ways. At home, Shani attends to her cat (of course) Taashya, lorikeet Simon and adopted stray TJ. Shani also has a young daughter who keeps her very busy on her days off. In the spare time that she does have, Shani loves to read and keep fit. Being Sri-Lankan, cricket is in her blood and will gladly talk cricket all day long.

Dr Helen Iconomou B.V.Sc (Hons) - Associate Veterinarian

Our Nurses

Jenny Haynes - Veterinary Nurse

Hello! My name is Jenny. I've been working in the Veterinary industry for over twelve years; this is my eighth year at St Marys Vet Hospital. I began as a dog and cat Groomer at  Randwick Veterinary Hospital, but nursing is my passion. I have completed a number of nursing and other related course at TAFE, but I think that "hands on" is the best way to learn!. I enjoy every aspect of my job, and each day is like a new adventure.

When I'm at home I spend my time with my Fiance Jed, our son Caleb, daughter Talia and our puppy dogs - Jack Russel terriers named "Iggy" and "Booger".

Kirsten Cartwright - Veterinary Nurse

I have always loved animals and have a passion for helping them. Veterinary Nursing was the perfect career choice, because I get to spend a lot of time doing something I love!

I have successfully completed Certificate 4 in Animal Studies, and am currently working full-time here at St Marys Vet Hospital. This is my first job as a Veterinary Nurse; the staff here have all been very encouraging and have helped me in my training and made me feel welcome.

I love how no two days are the same - every day we see something different. And I love interacting with our clients and their pets!

At home we have a Pappilion named Zorro, a Maltese x Shih-Tzu named Tess, and a rabbit named Bounce.

Savannah Van Der Dray - Veterinary Nurse

Penny the Hospital Cat

Penny - Clinic Cat, Chair Warmer

Hi my name is Penelope Jane but everyone calls me Penny. Of course I'm the most important member of our staff, all our clients always are asking about me and saying how beautiful I am. I love living here because I get to meet lots of different people and their pets. I love playing with all the puppies in Puppy Preschool, and sneaking the "occasional" liver treat. Oh, yes, and I'm very good at sleeping!
